COMPARE · VS QUICKBOOKS

QuickBooks is accounting software. We’re a food and beverage ERP.

QuickBooks is accounting software, and it’s good at it. Harvest is a food and beverage ERP. Two different categories of tool, for two different stages of a food and beverage operation.

Where the categories diverge

QuickBooks is good software. We’re not here to bash it. For a food and beverage business getting started, it does what accounting software does, and it does it affordably.

The difference shows up as the operation grows. QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise ships industry editions for construction, manufacturing, wholesale and distribution, retail, nonprofit, professional services, and accountants. There isn’t one for food and beverage. A food and beverage operator running QuickBooks picks the generic Manufacturing edition and configures it. That edition has Bill of Materials, assemblies, and — on Platinum and Diamond — lot tracking, serial tracking, and expiration dates. Useful for product builds. It isn’t food-specific compliance: no FDA Big 9 allergen inheritance through production, no recipe management with yield variance, no catch weight, no mock recall as a named workflow.

And there’s no Direct Store Delivery. If your operation runs route deliveries to stores — driver settlement, proof of delivery, payment collection at the door — QuickBooks doesn’t have a product for it. Field Service Management is for scheduled service calls. Pick / pack / ship is for fulfillment. Neither is DSD.

What that means in practice: a food and beverage operator on QuickBooks ends up stitching the food-specific work — compliance, recipes, route delivery — into spreadsheets and bolt-on systems around the accounting software. An ERP built for food and beverage carries that work natively.

Where QuickBooks has the edge

QuickBooks has the largest small-business accounting ecosystem in North America — an enormous accountant network and hundreds of third-party app integrations. If your operation can be served by generic accounting with industry-edition tooling, that ecosystem is a real advantage. For businesses outgrowing Desktop Enterprise, Intuit now markets Intuit Enterprise Suite (IES) as its AI-native ERP upgrade path, with a direct migration tool and everything staying inside one vendor family. For NA food and beverage manufacturers who need food-vertical depth, DSD, and pricing you can plan from, the trade-off doesn’t favor QuickBooks. For operators who don’t need food-specific tooling, or who want to stay inside the Intuit ecosystem, it does.

The migration path

Moving from QuickBooks to Harvest is a known process. We’ve done it many times.

An accounting-only migration runs 4–8 weeks. Implementation is priced per module — Accounting starts at $9,000, with Inventory, Manufacturing, and DSD added as your operation needs them. We move your chart of accounts, your customers, your vendors, your open transactions, and your historical balances. Your team trains in parallel. Go-live is planned, not a fire drill.
